The Artists Studio and the Eton Boy

This is one of a set of two paintings. Alan Hyde says they were part of a collection at Callally Castle in Northumberland and were offered for sale at auction on the 15th June 1988 (lot number 180) by Sotheby's but failed to meet their reserve (unknown) and were withdrawn.

I photographed the above picture from a colour print which Elizabeth Miller (Frank's grand-daughter) possessed, when I travelled to England in July 2000.

Recently while going through my colour slides, I found the reproduction, so I made the digital scan illustrated above. The background was not clear in the original print.

One of the pair "The Eton Boy" - (an amusing picture of an Etonian looking sideways at a nude model) was depicted in the Brochure for an Exhibition of Nude Victorian Painting in October 2002 at the Tate Gallery.

Note: 30 June 2016
The small sketch at the left of the top picture appears to be the portrait of Rosina Ferrara given to Frank in 1878 by the artist John Singer Sargent.
