Hook, Dine and Finger

'Hook, Dine and Finger'

The above image was sent to me by Pattie and Don Davis who live in Texas.

They called the lithographic print "The one that got away". However from information supplied by Elizabeth, this lithograph appears to be based on an original oil painting of size 35x29 inches, that was sold by Christies Lot no. 67 on the 18/10/74 for 336 pounds Sterling.

The print is inscribed: "London, Published 15th June 1896 by Edward Freeman, 1 Conduct Street W. & 175 New Bond Street W_______, Printed in Austria".

Elizabeth wrote:
I love the "The One that Got Away". I recognize the models from the other paintings and the wine carafe I have here (on top of the tallboy) alongside the punchbowl. We think it may be "Hook Dine and Finger" It is the sort of terrible pun on "Hook Line and Sinker" that the old boy would have loved.

3rd. July 2007:
I received the following amusing and appreciative letter:

Dear David,

At the weekend I was reframing some pictures I have and found half a picture which had been used as backing card for one of the two pictures, I spent the rest of the weekend wondering who the monk was arguing with and wondered about the picture.

So it was great today to be able to Google the artist whose signature appears and find the full picture and found your Frank Hyde website. I have the monk on the left, his fish and half a fat hand and its great to be able to see the rest of it.

Thanks for your site!
