The Jackdaw of Rheims

'The Jackdaw of Rheims'
Image size 5'7" w x 4'0" h (oil on canvas)
circa 1898

This image was sent by Scott who works for a Law firm in Dallas. The painting is privately owned and it is believed that it was received by one of the founding partners in trade for legal services. The firm has kindly given permission for it to be displayed here.

Scott writes " --- The story of the painting is that the Cardinal (the tall man with a grumpy face) had ranted and raved and placed a curse on the priests and monks trying to find which one of them had stolen his ring. When the jackdaw ejected the ring, the clergymen notified the Cardinal. The painting is the Cardinal returning to apologise. That's why he has a scowl on his face. Notice the bird has lost some of its plumage and is limping due to the curse the Cardinal placed. --- "

There are two other illustrations for the poem "The Jackdaw of Rheims" in this gallery, so it can be assumed that Frank did a series. This is the first oil painting I have seen; presumably Frank made a series of oil paintings from which he had engravings made for producing lithographic prints.
