'A Kitchen Conundrum'

The Jackdaw of Rheims - A variation

'A Kitchen Conundrum'
(1898 - 37" w x 25" h - lithograph)

My second cousin Annette, who is grand-daughter of Captain John Francis Hyde's second son, Frederick de la Hyde, sent me the picture and writes:

"The one with the jay bird in a kitchen has the following:

'Entered according to act of congress 1898 by Louis Wolff & Co in the office of the Librarian of Congress at Washington.'

'London Published August 1898 Lois Wolff & Co 245 Tottenham Crt Rd Copyright registered Printed in Vienna.'

Signed in pencil Frank Hyde which I presume is his personal signature. From memory I think the other is signed in the same way but is not visable because of the frame. I had them reframed about 20 years ago. Both signatures are in the white margin area at the bottom.

She said that Uncle Frank left these lithographs with her as a gift when he left Eden to return to England.

After my grandfather (Frederick de la Hyde) died she had to sell many possessions to make ends meet including these pictures which were bought by a mrs Logan who lived in Eden. When Mrs Logan died many of her belongings were auctioned and I asked my other grandmother if she would go and bid for the pictures as she loved auctions, and this she did.

No one else was interested in them and I got them for ten shillings each. I guess I did it out of respect for my paternal grandmother as I knew they meant something to her. This was 1964 or 5 ...    Hope this suffices."
